FUNDRAISING:

It’s time to take on the Wine Tasting Planning! Our first meeting of the year will be next Wednesday, January 18th at 6pm at Taylor’s office. There will be snacks and beverages available. This is a really fun event to plan, all members are welcome and I’m looking forward to spending time with my wonderful Fundraising Committee again!

The biggest part of the spring fundraiser is the auction. If you have ideas of auction items or business you think may donate, feel free to go ahead and ask them and update spreadsheet (link to be emailed)

Thanks girls!!

COMMUNITY:

The Community commitee and the Board have been involved in discussions about how best to launch our major initiative towards self esteem issue based impact.  During these discussions it was decided that the best way to move us towards our goal of establishing a meaningful impact in the self esteem of young women would be to forgo holding an Academy for Success this spring in favor of holding approx. 4 small focus group discussions with our target audience to learn directly from them what problems they see and what solutions they feel would be most impactful and meaningful.  These focus groups will be held beginning in January and proceeding into March.  The Board feels that these groups will still allow for one on one interaction with the girls and provide a meaningful volunteer opportunity for our members while collecting research data that we can use to build an effective set of programs to support and develop our new focus area of self esteem.

At our last meeting we decided to get feedback from school councelor’s and psychiatrists from what issues they see having a negative impact on self esteem and as a result of the great discussion at our last meeting we are pleased to have Ms. Tambra Menchion, Social Worker at Aberdeen Elementary and Pinecrest High School (who is actually a former Jr. Leaguer from Massachusetts!) agree to attend our meeting and give us a short presentation on her observations.  We will also be doing a short education session about the process of moving towards issue based community impact, where we are in that process, and the next steps for us moving forward.

Just because we are not doing a large project like Academy does not mean that members are not required to participate in these meetings and discussions.  It is vital to have member support and participation while we are charting the new course for our League!!!  This is your League and we want it to reflect our members thoughts and interests.  At the February meeting we will be going over the information that we gain from this meeting and Taylor’s meeting with the counselors at Southern Middle School this Wednesday at 12pm and narrowing down our focus area.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:

Jessica needs all chairs to send her their relevant dates for the Spring so that they can be added to the calendar on the website.  Please send her your info ASAP.

NOMINATING AND PLACEMENT:

We will be discussing briefly the Chair positions that are available and what each position entails.  We are hoping to start placing Chairs by next meeting!

All chairs need to be sure that they are remembering to submit their reports before the GMMs.  If it is not on the report form, it will not be added to the meeting packet or discussed at the meetings.  The only way to keep all members informed is to be dilligent about our reporting.

Community has also been in talks with the League of Women Voters about a possible partnership to show the film “Iron Jawed Angels” to raise awareness about women’s rights and encourage young women to vote.   Details are being investigated and budgeted currently and we should have more information for you soon.  There will be no community meeting in December.

Nominating and Placement is prepared to present the slate for a vote at the GMM.  All Board positions have been filled with great candidates and it looks like we will have a solid team heading into next year.  If for whatever reason you will not be able to attend the meeting be sure to vote by proxy.

Proposed Slate:

President Elect – Leslie Habets

Treasurer Elect – Kate Williams

Corresponding Secretary – Wendy Smyth

Recording Secretary – Kelly Philpot

Public Relations – Jessica Patella

Below (volunteer checklist) you will find a list of volunteer opportunities for the upcoming 1 in 8k Race for the Cure. The Race will be held Saturday September 10 @ 8am in the village of Pinehurst.  We are not looking for the Junior League to fill all of the available volunteer opportunities with this race (but the more the merrier).  However, you can see that it literally ‘takes an army’ to pull off a race!  Whatever help you can provide will be much appreciated, and you get a free t-shirt plus eternal gratitude.  Can’t beat that!
**You can find out more information about this race by going to http://1in8k.org/ in addition, please see the information titled **The Cause**
Whoever would like to volunteer or have any further questions, please just let Leslie Habets, Community Chair, know what you would like to do, and also what t-shirt size.
